はばかる【憚る】

1 〔遠慮する〕 be afraid of…; be shy of…; hesitate 《to do》; have scruples about doing; shrink from doing; pay [act in] deference 《to…》; stand in awe of sb; be diffident to sb.

●外聞をはばかる be afraid of what others may think

・他聞をはばかる事柄(_ことがら) a confidential matter

・人前[人目]をはばかる be diffident to others
